Lagos State impounds 28 trucks over safety violations

The Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), working in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has impounded 28 heavy-duty trucks during a recent enforcement operation across the state for breaching essential safety regulations.

The development was made known on Wednesday in a statement issued by Mrs Bolanle Ogunlola, Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation.

Ogunlola explained that the trucks were taken off the roads for serious mechanical and regulatory failures, which included defective headlamps, malfunctioning rear lights, severely worn tyres, and missing or incomplete wheel nuts.

She also pointed out that several of the drivers were unable to produce valid driving licences and did not have up-to-date recertification cards from the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI), a mandatory credential for all commercial drivers within the state.

“The operation was part of our routine joint exercises designed to strengthen road safety across Lagos,” she said. “It is intended to make sure that heavy-duty vehicles adhere strictly to all required safety and operational standards.”

The Ministry of Transportation stressed that enforcement activities would remain consistent as part of its broader effort to safeguard motorists and reduce accidents linked to unfit trucks and inadequately trained drivers.
