JUST IN: Reps instruct NCC to block pornographic websites in Nigeria

The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block access to pornographic websites across the country.

The resolution followed a motion by Dalhatu Tafaki, a lawmaker from Katsina State, who argued that unrestricted access to explicit content is negatively impacting societal and moral values.

Tafaki cited warnings from psychologists and sociologists, stating that many young Nigerians have developed addictions to such content, which could have long-term psychological and social consequences. He also referenced countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia that have implemented similar restrictions.

“Experts have raised serious concerns about the psychological, sociological, and mental effects of consuming pornographic material,” he stated.

Following a voice vote approved by the Speaker, the House agreed that limiting access to explicit content would help safeguard Nigerians, particularly young people.

The lawmakers further instructed the NCC to ensure compliance by telecommunication companies and impose penalties on providers that fail to enforce the directive.
