JUST IN: Former Police IG dies

A former Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, has died. He was said to have passed away on Saturday at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja.

Arase, who served as the 18th Inspector-General of Police, was appointed in April 2015 by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and retired from the force in 2016 after years of service.

Following his exit from active duty, he remained active in public service. In January 2023, former President Muhammadu Buhari named him Chairman of the Police Service Commission, a position he held until June 2024 when President Bola Tinubu relieved him of the role.

Widely regarded as a brilliant intelligence officer, Arase once headed the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the intelligence arm of the police. He also served as Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State before becoming Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of intelligence.

He also represented Nigeria in international peacekeeping, including a United Nations mission in Namibia.

As of the time of filing this report, neither his family nor the Nigeria Police Force had made an official announcement on his passing.
