Tinubu affirms Obasa’s impeachment, meets new Lagos Assembly Speaker

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday confirmed the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, officially sealing his ouster from office.

The impeachment occurred on Monday, January 13, when 32 out of the 40 lawmakers in the Assembly voted to remove Obasa, citing allegations of corruption and authoritarianism.

On Wednesday evening, President Tinubu held a meeting with the newly appointed House leadership and members of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC) in Abuja.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, and Obasa were notably absent from the meeting, though Obasa was reportedly in Abuja at the time.

However, the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, along with other key lawmakers, attended the session, which was held behind closed doors.

During the meeting, President Tinubu expressed his disapproval of the manner in which the impeachment was carried out, likening it to a “coup.”

Despite his concerns, sources revealed that after extensive discussions with GAC leaders, Tinubu reluctantly accepted the decision, citing Obasa’s “alleged excesses” as a factor.

In her statement, Speaker Meranda assured the President of her commitment to collaborating effectively with Lagos State leaders and all arms of government.
