Atiku urges transparency in tax reform bill deliberations

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has weighed in on the ongoing discussions surrounding the Tax Reform Bills, emphasizing the need for fairness, justice, and equity in the nation’s fiscal policies.

In a statement released on December 1, 2024, Atiku noted the unity among Nigerians in their demand for a fiscal system that ensures balanced development across the country. He warned against any reforms that might deepen regional disparities by favoring a few states while disadvantaging others.

"The fiscal system we seek to promote must not exacerbate the uneven development of the federating units by enhancing the status of a few states while unduly penalizing others," Atiku stated.

Calling for objectivity and transparency, Atiku urged the National Assembly to conduct an inclusive public hearing on the Tax Reform Bills. He highlighted the importance of engaging diverse stakeholders, including civil society organizations, traditional institutions, public officials, politicians, and subject matter experts, to foster trust and accountability in the legislative process.

He further advised the National Assembly to revisit and disclose the resolutions of the National Economic Council (NEC), describing the council as a critical advisory body on economic matters with constitutional authority to guide the President.

"The NASS must ensure that in the final analysis, the contents of the Bills align with the interests of the vast majority of Nigerians," Atiku stressed.

As a former Vice President and a 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku’s statement reflects his ongoing commitment to advocating for policies that promote equity and national development.

The deliberations on the Tax Reform Bills remain a focal point in Nigeria’s quest for sustainable economic reforms, with stakeholders across various sectors closely monitoring the process.
