‘I want to follow Jesus’ – 22-year-old announces retirement from football

Swiss midfielder Silvan Wallner has shocked the football world by announcing his retirement at just 22 years old, citing a desire to "follow Jesus Christ" and honor the Sabbath.

Wallner, who launched his professional career with FC Zurich in 2020, has made over 100 appearances, including stints with Wil and BW Linz, where he recently inked a two-year deal in September.

In an official statement from Blau-Weiß Linz, Wallner expressed, “I am a devout Christian, and I read the Bible. I make my own life decisions. I want to follow Jesus Christ, and the biblical day of rest has become significant to me.”

He further explained, “As a footballer, this means I no longer wish to play professionally on Saturdays. This is a personal conviction I arrived at in recent days. I am not yet affiliated with any church.”

Wallner extended his gratitude, saying, “A big thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my football journey.”

This season, Wallner has featured in five matches for Blau-Weiß Linz, with his last appearance being a 1-2 loss against TSV Hartberg in late October.

He was also recently part of the Swiss U21 national team, with his final game being a 1-2 defeat to Albania in early September.
