Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, has publicly apologized to Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North/South in Abia State, following a heated incident that occurred during a package delivery.
In a video statement shared with the press, Abuwatseya expressed his regret over the altercation and called on Nigerians to forgive him, urging for unity and reconciliation.
"Good day, Nigerians. My name is Stephen Abuwatseya. A few days ago, I had a misunderstanding with Rt. Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh. I sincerely apologize for any words or actions on my part that may have provoked him. I believe it is time for us as Nigerians to rise above divisions based on religion, tribe, or region, and work together to strengthen our nation," Abuwatseya stated.
He continued with a message of forgiveness and unity: “Please, let us forgive and move on. It’s even written in our Lord’s Prayer: ‘Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.’ There can be no justice without forgiveness. Thank you very much.”
The driver also expressed gratitude towards his family and supporters: "I want to thank my family, my parents, my siblings, and everyone who stood by me during this time. Your support means a lot to me. I appreciate all of you. God bless Nigeria."
This apology comes shortly after Hon. Ikwechegh issued his own public statement, where he expressed remorse for his actions during the confrontation. In a post on his Instagram account, Ikwechegh apologized to the driver, the Nigerian Police Force, and the National Assembly, acknowledging that his behavior did not reflect the standards expected of a public official, regardless of the circumstances.
Ikwechegh noted that he had engaged in alternative dispute resolution with Abuwatseya, leading to a "mutual and respectful agreement" between both parties.
