Unlocking Ondo City's Potential: The Call for Effective Leadership By Dr. Femi Akinkuebi

Ondo City is a community rich in resources and vibrant with potential. Situated strategically, Ondo City is divided into two local government areas—Ondo West and Ondo East—each with its own distinct strengths. Yet, it remains held back by leadership challenges that have prevented it from reaching new heights. Ondo East is well known for its agricultural prowess and growing industrial sector, while Ondo West thrives as a bustling urban hub, home to a flourishing hospitality and entertainment scene.

Despite these unique qualities and the city’s history of producing influential figures like governors, ministers, senators, representatives, political appointees, professionals, and business leaders, its progress has been stifled due to disunity. Often, personal interests overshadow the collective good, leaving the city unable to work together toward a shared vision. This disunity has not only divided the leadership but also made it difficult for the community to present clear and cohesive demands to the government.

At the center of Ondo City’s struggle is the absence of clear and unified goals. In a space where leaders pursue different agendas, there lies uncertainty about what the city truly needs to thrive. The longstanding confusion has rendered the government’s numerous interventions ineffectual, as they lack the direction required to meet the city's specific needs. The consequence of this disunity in Ondo West and Ondo East is that any assistance from the government is either reduced or sidetracked by political maneuvering, benefiting a select few rather than the broader community.

For Ondo City to truly unlock its potential, there needs to be a coming together for a collective purpose. Leaders and citizens must collaborate to set clear priorities for the city’s future. Only through unity can the city define its needs and present them effectively to the government, ensuring that the right kind of support is secured. With a united front, the city can also empower visionary leaders who are focused on long-term development, not just short-term gains.

As it stands, the central government is uncertain about how to help because the political scene in Ondo is fragmented. Rather than advocating for collective benefits, political leaders are focused on personal gains. Moving forward, there must be a change. The community needs to come together, speak with one voice, and demand the kind of leadership that will prioritize the common good.

If these challenges are addressed, and by leveraging the city’s agricultural and industrial strengths, Ondo City could see significant economic growth. With this, Ondo City can begin to harness its full potential. The city’s young population also represents a wellspring of innovation and energy, which, if tapped, could fuel progress across various sectors. Improved infrastructure and services would enhance the quality of life for all residents, making Ondo City an even more desirable place to live and work.

The time to act is now. With effective leadership and a clear, unified vision, Ondo City can finally unlock the vast potential it holds and emerge as a beacon of progress and development. The future Ondo deserves is within reach—it just needs the right people to step up and lead the way.
