The Onwa Asaa festival in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, turned tragic on Sunday as gunmen, wearing masks, launched a violent assault, claiming multiple lives.
The attackers, reportedly arriving in a black Lexus SUV, targeted a popular eatery in the community, where they opened fire indiscriminately. Initial reports indicate that at least 10 people were killed in the horrifying incident.
Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of chaos, with people running for their lives amid the gunfire.
“It was terrifying. The gunmen appeared suddenly and started shooting everywhere. People were screaming and running in all directions. It felt like a battlefield,” one witness shared.
Although the motive behind the attack remains unknown, members of the community have called on the government to take urgent steps to restore peace and prevent further violence.
“We are pleading for immediate government intervention. We can’t continue living in constant fear. What should have been a day of joy has turned into a disaster,” lamented one local resident.
When Vanguard visited the scene, security forces, including police and other agencies, were present to maintain order. The police confirmed that an investigation into the attack is already underway.
