On Friday, Department of State Services (DSS) agents arrested journalist Edna Ulaeto from OrderPaper during a raid at her home.
OrderPaper's management issued a statement revealing that armed and masked DSS personnel forcefully entered Ms. Ulaeto’s residence, where they reportedly mistreated her before taking her away to an undisclosed location.
Witnesses in the vicinity who attempted to intervene or capture footage of the incident were reportedly pushed back, with some coerced into deleting their photos and videos under threats of arrest.
"The young woman, still in her casual nightwear, was aggressively handled and taken away without any indication of her destination, leaving her family and neighbors in a state of shock and fear," the statement detailed.
OrderPaper alleges that Ms. Ulaeto’s phone number was unlawfully tracked, and her arrest is believed to be related to a recent article that inaccurately reported a DSS operation at the National Assembly.
The article suggested that the operation was intended to thwart the removal of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Despite the newspaper's subsequent retraction and public apology, the DSS proceeded with the arrest, leaving Ms. Ulaeto's family and colleagues in disbelief.
The organization has urged civil society and the international community to advocate for Ms. Ulaeto's immediate release, condemning the action as an infringement on press freedom and human rights.
