FUPRE Launches Zero Waste Campus Project


In response to the growing need for effective waste management and its potential for wealth creation, the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), launched its "Zero Waste Campus Project" on September 10, 2024.

The initiative, aimed at transforming FUPRE into a model of sustainable waste management, was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor, Engr. Prof. Rim-Rukeh Akpofure. In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor stressed the importance of proper waste management, describing waste as "energy gone astray." He illustrated how everyday materials considered waste can be repurposed, such as fabric scraps turned into colorful clothing.

Prof. Rim-Rukeh also addressed the challenge of plastic waste, which often clogs gutters and takes a long time to decompose. He encouraged the university community to actively engage in the project and introduced Dr. Yemi Ogunkeyede, Director of the FUPRE Waste Management Centre, as a key figure in the initiative.

Dr. Ogunkeyede elaborated on the project’s goals, emphasizing that it aims not only to eliminate plastic waste but to turn waste materials into wealth through innovative recycling. To demonstrate this, F
