Ondo has resources to be richest State in Africa —Akingboye

Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA), CEO of Benshore Maritime and Clog Oil Systems, has asserted that if Ondo state efficiently taps into its abundant natural resources, it has the potential to become the wealthiest state in Africa.

In a meeting with the Ondo Patriotic Vanguard (OPV) at his Akure residence on January 2nd, 2024, Akingboye emphasized that Agbabu harbors the world's second-largest bitumen deposit, boasting verified reserves of around 42.47 billion tonnes.

He said, “Araromi in Ilaje LGA holds extensive maritime resources which could sustainably support South West Nigeria.

“Despite federal approval of Port Ondo at Araromi, it remains largely neglected and underdeveloped.

“Sand found within Ilaje LGA is also viable for glass production while coconut planting can be carried out successfully using this type of sand.

“If Araromi axis is developed as a Sunshine Smart City, there is an opportunity to generate billions while simultaneously decongesting Lagos through standard road networks linked to Epe, Ajah and Lekki axis.

“This would bring about significant economic transformation capable of positively impacting citizens' livelihoods particularly youth employability.

Akingboye lamented the continual disregard of responsibilities by successive administrations in Ondo state, failing to maximize the God-given resources for the well-being of its citizens.

"Instead, they have relied solely on meager allocations from Abuja, resulting in a development that primarily rests on civil servants as opposed to infrastructure and economic growth similar to Lagos or Rivers states." He said. Pm

He called upon the current government to move beyond mere Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) and instead, to take concrete steps such as obtaining approvals and forging partnerships with both local and international investors, adhering to global best practices. This approach aims to position Ondo State as a thriving global economy.

Acknowledging Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa's decisive actions in disbanding the illegal LGAs & LCDAs Caretaker committees following court rulings, Akingboye said “there's a suggestion that a comprehensive dissolution be coupled with the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections through ODIEC, aligning with the previously released timetables set for February 6th, 2024. All participating political parties have duly received accreditation for these elections.”

Akingboye urged  Lucky Aiyedatiwa to champion democratic progress in the local government areas (LGAs/LCDAs) impartially, thereby solidifying Governor Aiyedatiwa's legacy and legitimacy for posterity.
