Residents, Farmers, Schools, count losses as flood wreak havoc on Isinigbo

Residents of Isinigbo Community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State are counting their losses in millions of Naira as torrential rainfall in the area have rendered them homeless.

The downpour according to some residents who spoke to newsmen began at about 10pm last Sunday, lasting for about two days, thereby leaving them with little or nothing  to salvage from the homes of over 2,000 residents of the community who include children, pregnant women and some persons leaving with disabilities.

Isinigbo, an agrarian community reputed for the production of Yams, Maize and Cassava has over the years been one of the major suppliers of foodstuffs that feed the  residents of neighbouring Akure city and other major towns in Ondo State .

An Agronomist in private practice , Dr Johnson Afolayan described the incident as a disaster that might affect the food supply chains to consumers in the state except government, corporate bodies and public spirited organisations rise to the occasion.

A Public Health practitioner who doesn't want to be named said there was urgent need to deploy health workers and relief materials to the area so  that the devastating development doesn't become an epidemic.

One of the  Community leaders, Chief  Abiodun Iwalesin who put the estimated cost of damages at several Million Naira regretted that several retirees who  came to the community to invest their hard-earned retirment benefits into Agriculture may not survive the trauma of the incident if help did not come their way on time.

"We are using this medium to call on governments at all levels, Non- Governmental Organizations and Philanthropists to quickly come to our aid.

"Our people are downcast, we are devastated

"We in Isinigbo Community have been contributing greatly to the food needs of our state and Nigeria. We should not be left alone at this trying period, he said.
