The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio has come under fire for saying that a token has been credited into the bank accounts of the legislators in order to enable them enjoy their holidays.
In a viral video on Twitter on Wednesday, Akpabio who was seen addressing his colleagues, said “In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the clerk of the national assembly.”
In the one minute and fourteen seconds video, Akpabio retracted the statement and said, “I withdraw that statement. “In order to allow you to enjoy your holiday, the senate president has sent prayers to your mailboxes to assist you to go on a safe journey and return.”
However, the statement has continued to elicit reactions on Twitter, with many describing it as inappropriate.
In his reaction, a Human Rights Activist and former Senator who represented Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani wrote on Twitter that “Crediting the Legislators accounts are done under mute button, the Uncommon Senate President mistakenly pressed the alarm.”
A Twitter user, @Misspearls posted that “Godswill Akpabio is an embarrassment of monumental proportions”
“This is the kind of structure of criminality Obi has been saying he will dismantle. These guys don’t care about people’s suffering, all they want is to loot. Again, no politician in Nigeria is as humane as Obi!”
Another user with the name @Nwaadaz lamented that “Nigerian Soldiers Lament Hunger, Neglect, Non-payment Of Allowances Amid War Against Terrorists and Godswill Akpabio is busy sharing Nigeria money to his fellow corrupt Senators. Corruption everywhere”
