Mehdi Taj named new Iran football federation president

Mehdi Taj has been elected as the new president of the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) in a landslide victory over other contenders running for the top position.
On Saturday, Taj, the current president of the Iran Football League Organization and an FFIRI vice president, managed to garner 50 votes during an election at Tehran’s Olympic Academy and was named as the new FFIRI president to replace outgoing Ali Kaffashian. Taj was elected for a four-year term until 2020.
The two other hopefuls were Mostafa Ajorlou, a former chairman of Pas Tehran and Steel Azin football clubs, and Azizullah Mohammadi, the head of the Iran Football Union. They could win 15 and six votes respectively out of all ballots cast.
Kaffashian first took charge of the FFIRI in 2008, in a race with no other contenders.
He was re-elected to the post in March 2012, after he defeated Hossein Gharib in the federation’s presidential election.
“I feel quite tired, and for that reason decided not to register and run for the FFIRI president. Nevertheless, I won’t disappear from football since I am one of five vice presidents of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC),” Kaffashian said in mid-March.
