US Republican Senator John McCain has criticized GOP leaders and Congress members for being ‘out of touch’ with voters selecting the party’s presumptive nominee, Donald Trump.
In an interview with CNN, McCain said Republican leaders should recognize that millions of Americans have chosen Trump and that they should embrace presumptive GOP nominee as well.
"You have to draw the conclusion that there is some distance, if not a disconnect, between party leaders and members of Congress and the many voters who have selected Donald Trump to be the nominee of the party," the Arizona senator noted.
He added that GOP leaders were "out of step" with people if they failed to back up Trump.
Elsewhere in his remarks, McCain told CNN that Trump could be a capable president, but first he needs to "heal many of the wounds" he has opened.
The veteran politician, however, criticized Trump's campaign rhetoric, saying, "Frankly, I have never seen the personalization of a campaign like this one, where people's integrity and character are questioned...It bothers me a lot. Because you can almost violently disagree with an issue, but to attack their character and their integrity -- then those wounds take a long time to heal."
Trump's campaign has been marred by his defamatory remarks against minorities in the US. His comments include calling for a total ban on Muslims from coming to America and forced deportation of Mexican migrants.
The race for Republican nomination saw countless instances of scandals, mudslinging and onstage vulgarity, where rivals time and again seized opportunities to blacken their opponents and push them down the gutter.
